It is scary that Anne Widdecombe is right about science and homosexuality!

Political thought

During a Sky News interview about the success of the Brexit Party at the EU elections, Anna Widdecombe was asked about her previous statements that are deemed by many as homophobic. Through this discussion, Widdecombe stated that she believed one day science may be able to ''provide an answer'' to changing a person's sexuality. Whether her answer was intended to be or not, her comments are rooted in a homophobic and disgusting ideology that we should cure people of homosexuality and that it is similar to a disease. However, the fact that people still hold these beliefs is not the scariest part of her statement, it's the fact that she is more than likely right that one day science will be able to change people's sexuality.

In the world at the moment, chemicals and drugs can rewire the way people think to change and assist their feelings, hormones and operations can change a persons sex and science can manipulate DNA to create designer babies to how parents want them. The way science is going there is will be no impossibility to what a person can change about themselves. Many of the scientific discoveries will bring people a world of happiness as it will give the opportunity to assist people to live their best life and be happy in themselves; however, I worry that the day the ambitious scientist takes a sip of their champagne to celebrate their break through in changing people's sexuality it will open a Pandora's box of suffering for the LGBT community.

You only have to look to the past to see why. Parents thinking they know what is best for their child will force the procedure onto their son who only has a crush on his male friend. People thinking they are helping will knock on the door of the lady who is married to a women and hand them leaflets that tell them to take the drugs. Men and women will be taken from their homes and forced into taking the procedure. Day after day happy people will be dragged through hell and back as they are bombarded with gross media, abuse and slogans from people that believe they are doing right. Think of the religious organisations that already put LGBT people through hell and how much worse they would be if they could actually force people to change. Bigoted leaders of powerful nations will make it mandatory for LGBT people to take the procedure. Rather than making an accepting and loving world, science will give the means to force people's homophobic ideology onto everyone.

I can already see it now that people like Anne Widdecombe will find one or two people who would genuinely be happier that they can change their sexuality and they will use these people as poster boys for their homophobic rhetoric. I will be happy for the people that changing their sexuality brings genuine happiness to as the more control in being who we want to be is always better; but, I will weep for the way that homophobic people will abuse the scientific discovery as it will cause a world of pain and suffering for millions of people. It is scary to think that politicians like Widdecombe are right about science and homosexuality and believe it is a good thing. It is our duty to vote in politicians who, when the day comes for the ignorant scientist to take their cheery sip, will protect the LGBT community and vote in legislation against such answers provided by science.
