Movie Reviews- A Star is Born (2018)
This review was always going to be difficult to write because for all the shock and horror I am a staunch Little Monster. So, to try and write in an any way objective manner about something I was always going to have the same opinion about is tricky. The process actually makes me want to write a more negative review to in some way prove that I am trying to be critical and unbiased. I will attempt to list some of the flaws of the movie, but know when reading them the Little Monster in me is screaming ''Yessssss Qween'' and ''Slayyyyyy'' on repeat which are much more accurate to my reaction to the movie than any attempt to be critical.
Like how many have pointed out, the film is too long with one or two of the story lines easily able to be left on the cutting room floor. For example, do you remember that Bradley Cooper's character has Tinnitus? Of course you do because every other line he asks the other characters to repeat what they just said. If this was cut out, the movie would be half the length. In addition, there are a couple of scenes that have a clear element of improvisation to them that slightly drag the scene on. The most obvious culprit was the bath tub scene where Lady Gaga clearly misses her cue to explode, so Cooper has to deliver it a couple lines later to get the appropriate reaction.
Both of the above points are truly just tiny observations in an exceedingly well crafted movie. To get bogged down on the very few negatives would truly miss the point. This movie had every reason to fail. Lady Gaga, the controversial pop star that no matter which way you try and spin it wasn't at the height of her career when signing onto the project, was stepping her toes into acting. Bradley Cooper was taking the helm of a story that had been retold three times, so he had the gargantuan task of trying to breath life into an already tired story. This is his first directing gig no less. All of which paired with the fact that many believe the death of the mid range budget movie is dead in the crowded blockbuster market. Why Warner Bros agreed to do it I do not now- there was so many aspects to fail. Yet, Cooper, Gaga and their Bros managed to pull off the unimaginable.
This movie is not excellent because it exceeds expectations, it is excellent because you will get gosh darn goosebumps at every step of the way. The Shallow scene and everything leading up to it is movie perfection. The Grammy scene is shocking without being over the top and cheesy. And, that final song will bring tears to any soul that does not have a heart of stone. I knew that my love for the movie wasn't just fan adoration when I looked over to my mother, someone who likes to remind me on the daily how bad Gaga be, and she was weeping like there was no tomorrow and continued to weep as the cinema staff cleaned around us. Her love for the movie didn't end there, when we got home and listened to the amazing soundtrack she began to weep again when hearing 'Is that Alright?' a song not present in the main body of the film. As a Gaga fan of over ten years, I never believed I would have the chance to share a connection with a Gaga song and my mum like that, so thank you Warner Bros for taking the chance on something so risky and giving me the chance to hear my mum say a completely unbiased ''Yesssss Qween!'.
